Difficulty: Easy

Time: 10 Minutes

Step 1.

Open a new document in Photoshop and input the file specifications of your chosen WOVNS quality.

In the below example, we use specifications for the Divan Quality: 2400 pixels wide x 6372 pixels high.

Step 2.

Load the WOVNS color palette of your choice. See Designing with WOVNS Color Palettes in Photoshop for more information on how to load a WOVNS color palette into the Swatches menu.

Step 3.

You now have a blank canvas in which to create your design. You have many options: You can use Photoshop tools such as the Shape, Pen, or Brush tools to generate your design, or you can paste in a drawing you created in Illustrator. See Creating Repeats in Illustrator.

Step 4.

For example, the drawing below was created with Photoshop Shape Tools: To create a circle in your design, select a WOVNS palette color from your Swatches menu, then select the Ellipse Tool. Hit Shift to constrain proportions and drag your circle on the canvas until you have achieved a desired size. Similarly, you can create many shapes with this approach.

Step 5.

Once you have completed your design, you may want to evaluate if your design works as a repeating pattern. This is especially true for the Divan quality, where your design will repeat across the fabric width 4 times with a 13.5″ design width (For details on repeat specifications, see the File Specifications page).

First, save your current file. This will be the file you upload to WOVNS if you like how your design repeats.

To test how your pattern repeats go to Edit > Define Pattern. Name your pattern and click OK.

Step 6.

Open a new test document that is at least double the size of your original document. In the below example, we have created a test document that is 4 times the width and 2 times the height to see how the pattern will look across the 54″ wide Divan quality and woven 2 yards high.

Select the entire canvas, then go to Edit > Fill. In the Contents dropdown menu, click Pattern. Under Options, find your Custom Pattern, and click OK.

Step 7.

If you are satisfied with how your design repeats, prepare your original file for upload (saved in Step 5). Make sure your file adheres to the WOVNS File Specifications, uses a WOVNS color palette (see Designing with WOVNS Color Palettes in Photoshop) and any unwanted pixelation is cleaned. Save your file as an Indexed PNG and you are ready to upload to WOVNS. Go to Submit Design on the WOVNS website, specify the quality and palette used, yardage amount, name it and submit.
